La Vida Loca in Oklahoma and Arkansas
WOW. what a crazy couple of weeks here in Idabel, Oklahoma/Arkansas. The people down here are soo cool and welcoming. The country is beautiful. There are trees everywhere and swamps and beautiful sunsets and cats. Cats everywhere--gangs of them. ha ha
The first day we were here we were knocking on someone's door and we hear 5 gun shots close to us. We were like, we gotta get out of here, so we jumped in the car and there were police flying past us. It was crazy. ha ha That was a good way to get introduced into Oklahoma in McCertain County. Apparently it is in the top ten cities for drug use in the United States. But it's been awesome here.
On Christmas morning we had the opportunity to go to this family's house. He is a single dad who has cancer and five children, so we brought tons of presents to their house and brought them breakfast. We had a blast as we watched them open their Christmas presents. It was so awesome. They were so thankful for us and for everything we got. And then I had the opportunity to Skype my family and it was super cool to see the fam again, and to see Garrett, or (Elder Frampton). ha ha
I have a couple of crazy stories I want to share. So we do our studies in the library and I'm like, hey, I'm going to go to the bathroom. As I was walking to the bathroom I waved at this guy and this girl and then walked into the bathroom. As I was about to shut the stall door, the guy I waved at walks in and goes what are you trying to start (bro), but he didn't actually say Bro. ha ha I was like, what are you talking about? When I closed the stall he started saying, "I'm going to come in there (bro) and beat you up." and then I was like, "what are you talking about?" Then he was like, "what would you do if I came in there and beat you up (bro)? I hurried and finished and opened the door and he was just standing there staring at me. He said, "you trying to start something? C'mon let's do this right now." I was like, "I don't know what you are talking about man, but you have a good day," and I walked out. It was the weirdest bathroom experience I have ever had! And the fastest. ha ha.
Later that week we went to this recent convert's trailer because he had some questions. We walked in and there is barely enough room for all 3 of us. When I go to sit down there is a huge rifle on my chair and I was like, um, okay . . . Then while we were answering his concerns his dogs started barking outside so he pulls out a pistol and goes outside and starts yelling at the people who were out there. then he came back in and he was just waving his pistol around and I was shocked. I thought he was going to shoot one of us. I was kind of scared. ha ha It was crazy.
But this week has been awesome. We found 9 new investigators and set 2 baptismal dates. On Sunday it was icy on the roads so we couldn't go out, which was a bummer, but it was okay. There are people here that are ready for the gospel.
I love Idabel. The people here are super nice. I love the Marshelleese people here. Its crazy how small the ward is though. That is weird for me, and also how far away some of our investigators are. There is some Spanish work here, so that's exciting. My comp is completely the opposite from me, but he's good. We are getting along and we work well together in lessons. I love it.
I just want to put a scripture out here today. Alma 34 39-41. This scripture is amazing. I invite everyone who reads this letter to look it up and think about it. This scripture has helped me a lot with being patient and trusting in the Lord always in prayer, and also to love people as they truly are and to truly get to know some one.
I love you all. Go meet someone. Try to get to know someone on a deeper level. Always REMEMBER TO PRAY. Have a great week!
